by Asmida Abdul Majid [View Writer's Profile]

Abstract
This article discus the important of parenting style in personality development of children. It is a good topic because a lot of problems that occurred nowadays are related to the children development, which started at home. It is because parents are the first people who will cares and control the children. Therefore, the life practice of parents will influence the personality of the children. This discussion will define the word of parent, parenting style and focus on the several of parenting styles that has been studied by some researchers before. One of the opinions stated that parenting styles could be classified to permissive parents, authoritarian parents, authoritative parents and uninvolved parents. This article also discusses parenting style from Islamic perspective. There are some verses from Qur’an (the Book of Allah) and Hadith (the Says of the Prophet Muhammad S.A.W) to support all my points.

Parenting styles affect the personality development of the children in a family
Children were born naturally virtuous from sin. It is responsible for parents to guide their children to the right path. Parent is the person who is responsible to raise, care, love, protect, guide and educate the children to be good and right human being. Parenting is regarded as a complex activity, which combine many specific behaviors that work individually and together to influence children outcomes. Therefore, it is also declared as the special task that given by God to the parents and become as the noble duty which will be rewarded by Allah S.W.T. As Prophet Muhammad said, “A father’s teaching his child good manners is better than giving a bushel of grain (in charity)” (Bukhari).

Parent is a first people that will cares and educate the children. Therefore, they have a total power to control the development of their children. There are various styles, which used by parents to build and lead their children to become as the good man. Some of them too strict in control their children and some of them too soft and too gentle in handling their children. All of them have their own specific reasons and opinions. This approach we call as parenting style. Parenting style is a concept that found by Diana Baumrid as an approach to control and socialize the children. This concept could be understood by looking at two perspectives 1.

First, parenting style is used to describe normal variation in parenting. But in this perspective Diana Baumrind did not include the deviant parent such as the parents in abusive or neglectful homes. In the second perspective, she regards that parenting style is change around issue of ‘control’. It means, even parents may differ in the way they socialize or control their children, it is still regarded as the primary role of all parents. It is including influencing, teaching and controlling their children 2.
